When to Arrive

You should plan to arrive in the Faculty in the week before the first day of classes (September 8, 2009) unless otherwise agreed upon with your supervisor. Our Graduate Orientation Session for new students will be held in the week before classes and we will notify new students of the date for the session during the summer.

Please visit the Graduate Office in the Cunningham Building Room 174 within the first few days of your arrival. We would like to meet you soon after your begin your program.

Plan to attend the Faculty Orientation in early September, where you will be provided with very important information about the Graduate Program and UBC.

Orientation Sessions

The UBC Faculty of Graduate Studies (FOGS) Core Orientation Day for New Graduate Students will be held in August before classes begin (date to be announced). Visit the FOGS website to register for this event.

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences Graduate Student Orientation takes place on:

Monday, September 14, 2009
9:00 AM - to 3:00 PM
Medical Sciences Block C 117

The Faculty's Graduate Student Orientation is mandatory for all new graduate students beginning their program in September 2009. It is designed to provide new and current students with valuable information that will help them excel in the Faculty's graduate program.

Communicating With Your New Supervisor

You should communicate with your supervisor during the summer before you arrive in Vancouver. Your supervisor can assist you in understanding the elements that are important to a successful integration into your academic program during your first year of study. Make an effort to correspond with or even visit your supervisor at least a few weeks before your first term of enrolment at UBC.

You can begin developing ideas for your thesis/dissertation even before you come to campus. Your research supervisor may be able to suggest important publications you should read to become more familiar with your area of scholarly interest.

If you have been awarded an appointment as a teaching or research assistant for your first term on campus, you should also inquire about any initial requirements. Contact the course supervisor (if you are a teaching assistant) or your research supervisor (if you are a research assistant) to find out when they would like to set up an initial meeting with you.

Registration

UBC has two academic sessions:

Winter (September 1 to April 30) Register in August
Summer (May 1 to August 31) Register in April

The Student Services Centre or SSC is the portal to all of your academic and financial information. This is where you register, pay fees and much more. Please sign on as soon as possible and change your password. Your password is initially set as your year, month, and date of birth (yymmdd).

A minimum of 30 course credits are required for the M.Sc. degree. All new students (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) are required to take PHAR 590 for credit. All students will also be required to take PHAR 591 (Scholarly Integrity and Ethics), which will become available after January 2008.

Register in your thesis course (PHAR 549 or PHAR 649) for both the Winter and Summer sessions.

Course offerings and outlines can be found online at UBC Student Services. You can also register online. For any problems with course registration, contact the Faculty's Graduate Office.

Things to Consider When Registering for Courses

  1. Discuss your courses and timetable with your supervisor before registering.
  2. Note that the SSC will only allow you to register in courses to a maximum of 18 credits per term.
  3. For students wishing to transfer from the M.Sc. to the Ph.D. program, you must achieve a minimum average of 80% in 12 credits in which at least 9 credits are at the 500-level or above and in which at least 9 credits are at 80% or above.

You MUST register in the thesis course (PHAR 549B/004 for M.Sc. and PHAR 649/001 for Ph.D. students) during the Winter session (Terms 1 and 2) and the Summer session (PHAR 549B/942 and PHAR 649/941). If you do not continue to register in the thesis course, UBC will assume you have ended your program and will stop paying you.
