About The Research

I am investigating the role of P-glycoprotein (Pgp) in the absorption and homeostasis of cholesterol in the gastrointestinal tract. Pgp, a member of the ATP binding cassette family of transporter proteins, is well known for its role in multidrug resistance and as a limiting factor in the bioavailability of a number of therapeutic agents. My studies involve gene deletion as a tool to examine the role of Pgp in cholesterol homeostasis pathways by examining changes in phenotype as well as monitoring compensatory changes to established regulatory mechanisms.
